Lifting Fists To Jealous Faces

Hey all, i just put together the new newsletter for The Mooch, you're gonna notice i used some old posts to help fill it out, but as it were i think maybe three or four people in Tulsa actually read this, so it's all new to them. bare with me, at least the mixtape will be worth your time.
I'll try to get some new post up here tomorrow, for now though i have spent way too much time on this bitch. Hope you are all having a good day!

Friends of the Mooch I have three words for you, Blooty, Blooty, Blooty.
If you weren't at the store this past Saturday, i feel sorry for you as the spectacle of the champagne baptism has come and gone and in it wreckage stands a legend. For those of you who were, High Five! Through storytelling and fanciful pictorials we can pass the story on down through the generations lest no one forget the humble figures who stood valiantly at the Parthenon of Rock.
Aside from that, it's been a slow week, a few new releases and an overflowing cornucopia of recently arrived punk and hardcore treats for you to jump right into.
So let's get to it!

New Releases 5/12/08

Ashlee Simpson - Bittersweet World 2xLP
Ha, like we'd actually carry this bullshit. Enjoy her career highlight.

Death Cab For Cutie - Narrow Stairs CD
New Death Cab. Something tells me those words were enough to help you make up your mind. I'll save my energy for elsewhere.

Health - Health CD
Fresh off the presses, neo-noiseters Health have finally released their very limited edition self-titled LP on CD just in time for their all-encompassing global domination tour that currently will not be stopping anywhere close to here. In the meantime, see what Pitchfork has been raving about for months, because as we know, as soon as this album gets in the hands of more than the original 500 people, this band is gonna blow.

Scarlett Johanson - Anywhere I Lay My Head CD
It used to be the rappers who would take the Bo Jackson approach to other mediums, becoming movie stars, sitcom staples, reality show fodder, and commercial spokesmen, so it comes as quite a shock that within the same year two, should we say A-List actresses, decided to shake off the shackles of the Hollywood limelight and join the elite club of actors come potential publicity nightmares (a great list including Juliet Lewis (really? wasn't she fucking annoying enough to begin with?), Keanu Reeves (Dogstar, great name there buddy. I heard you were an effff beee aye agent.), the mad Kiwi Russel Crowe (he at least has the venom of a rocker), Johnny Depp (don't think we forgot about that one!), Bruce Willis (yippie kie yay motherfucker!), Jared Leto (just because you play a character whose in a band on TV doesn't mean you have to do it in real life), and of course the one and only Hasselhoff (who said Germans don't have taste?)). Zoe Deschnaell pulled it off with her pairing with M. Ward, but now it's Scarlet Johanson's turn. Unlike the former, scarlet's not so big on writing her own songs, instead she's put together an cover album of tom waits songs. now I'm not saying that's ballsy, I'm just saying, maybe i wouldn't come out of the gate singing songs revered by multiple generations. i mean, you don't go to karaoke and bust out the Journey if you know your range is Chicago.
Deicide - Till Death Do Us Part CD
The album's cover says "The fastest, most brutal Deicide album ever!" I say, "i think I shit
We Are Scientists
- Brain Thrust Mastery CD
Proof positive, myspace works in peoples favor. Two years ago they were nobodies, today they are scientists. huzzah.myself."
Coalesce - 012:2 CD
This is for the boys who like to feel tough but still shop at abercrombie and fitch. Pissed off metal-core from your favorite Kansan frat boys. ya heard!
Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. - Recurring Dream And Apocalypse Of Darkness CD
Brand new album from the masters brain-melting noise, drone, and spacious soundscapes. Do not listen to while operating heavy machinery, it may make you lightheaded. side effects include euphoria, nausea, diaharrhea, uncontrollable spastic vomitting, knee jerk reactions, failed pregnancy, and sometimes the Aids.
Also, this just in...

Baroness/Unpersons - Split CD
Booka Shade - Movements LP
Born Against - Battle Hymns For The Race War LP
You either loved them or you hated them, but by god Born Again$t were sons of hardcore.
It's hard to finger their sound because there really was a lot going on, and for the time (early 90's) breaking new ground with a sloppy yet succinct playing style that would be emulated for most of the next decade. Lyrically very political, themes ranging from corporate tyranny, America's stranglehold vision of foreign affairs, rape, inner city crime, and self-loathing amongst others, at any given moment it seems as if the band could implode on itself.
The title gives almost a way too in your face kind of vibe, and it should. What would be their final album before breaking apart, captures all the tension and fistfights of this troubled band. Vinnie Stigma calling in a death threat begins the self-effacing would be theme song "Born Again$t are fucking dead", the predatory "Murder the Sons of Bitches" lurking in the shadows, playing games with your head. "Poland" taking aim at the low wages/living conditions paid to immigrants, all of this and more packaged in a brief forty-five minutes.
Born Against - Nine Patriotic Hymns For Children LP
Snotty as hell, caustic as steel wool, an answer to the final days of the first Bush's regime of imperialism. Tracks like "By The Throat", "Mary & Child", and "Nine Years Later" still ring out as anthems for an era.

Daitro - Lassier Vivre Les Squelettes LP
Continuing a fine trend of French Hardcore.
Damad - Burning Cold CD

Damad - Rise & Fall LP

Daniel Striped Tiger - Capital Cities LP

Death To Tyrants - Wake Up And Be CD
Death To Tyrants - Experience Will Be... LP
Demented Are Go - The Demon Teds CD

DJ Spooky - Sound Unbound 2xCD
Econochrist - Discography 2xCD
While not considered the first Punk Band in Little Rock, Econochrist, who made their name universally known in the Bay Area, began their assault in the Rock. Dating back to the mid-eighties, Econochrist created their own brand of thick guitar, driving bass, gruff voiced hardcore with intensely political leanings. My introduction was a copy of their Skewed 7", bought from Brad's distro box. I took it home and found myself listening to side two repeatedly, the song "Bled Dry" becoming something of an anthem for me, and instilling a life-long love of Hardcore. In their near decade history they released a handful of 7"s, two LPs, and an endless stream of compilation tracks, leaving an indelible mark on the world of hardcore paving the way for future generations. They may not have been the first in the area, but their music and message continue to influence to this day.
Econochrist - Another Victim 7"
Econochrist - Skewed 7" (This is the record that made me realize hardcore was for me!)

End Of The Line - End Of The Line 12"
Members of Heroin, Antioch Arrow, John Henry West, Han Shan, Rice, Spacehorse, & Clikitat Ikatowi. If any of those band names mean something to you, you are probably shitting your pants right now. You may have to fight me on this one.
Floodgate - Trouble's A Brewin 12"
I'm still amazed this is in print and showed up. Goddamn.
Floor - Floor LP
If you're into Torche, this is where it started.
Four Hundred Years - Suture & Other Songs CD
The other members of Groundwork turned up here with the help from Bull from Policy of 3.

Funeral Diner - The Underdark CD
Funeral Diner - The Wicked EP CD

Groundwork/Unbroken - Split 7"
Hellbender - Con Limon LP
Pre-Milemarker Al Burian!!! Still in print somehow!
His Hero Is Gone - The Dead Of Night In 8 Movements 7"
Jeff Richardson (of Stevedore fame) played this for me outside the one and only show that happened at the Knights Of Columbus Hall (Burned Up Bled Dry/Bob Of Tribes!!!) back in '97. He loved the seven inch so much he made an iron-on of the cover and then put it on a sweatshirt. If you see him around, you should be like "hey dude, high five!" Just one more reason Jeff Richardson is a solid dude.
His Hero Is Gone - Fifteen Counts Of Arson CD
I'm hard-pressed to find something heavier that came out in the mid nineties and drawing a blank. When His Hero Is Gone debuted their legendary Eight Movements in the Dead of Night 7", you could almost feel the changes happening in hardcore before the record ended.
In Tulsa, the 7" inspired a few bands to start playing, and before you knew it, the Arkansas kids were turning in their versions as well, and the wildfire had only begun. The only question was, could anything compare to the genius of that first recording?
Apparently so, released at the beginning of the following year, Fifteen Counts of Arson, show HHIG in top form, continuing in their sludgy double vocal attack. The music is painful and violent, like reaching into the mind of a serial killer and giving his thoughts a life of their own. These songs are not here to be your friend, they are here to hurt you. They will punch you in the stomach and kick you in the face when your down, that is the true nature of these songs.
The record moves at such a quick pace it's over before you realize it, the broken teeth scattered about the floor is a quick reassurance the record has done it's job.
As a bonus on CD, The Dead of Night 7" was added for those without the miraculous turntable action, creating a solid piece of work, and firmly grabbing hold of His Hero Is Gone's place in the pantheon of hardcore greats.
Most of the songs included are below the two minute mark, save for the exception of "The End Result of Eleven Days In A Mental Hospital" (my personal favorite track, which clocks in at a whopping four and a half minutes), pushing twenty-four tracks into a thirty minute package of blistering slow madness.
His Hero Is Gone - Monuments To Thieves CD
His Hero Is Gone - The Plot Sickens... CD

Hot Chip - Made In The Dark CD
Iconoclast - Iconoclast CD
Iconoclast - Wits End 7"

Indian Summer - LP
Indian Summer wasn't a band for a long time, instead separating while still young. They left few documents, a seven inch here, a couple of splits there, topped off with a few compilation appearances. The legend of the band quickly grew (albeit sometimes wholly out of proportion), those who saw them (i am not one of them) holding fast to the power and beauty these four gawky teenagers presented. Like all legends, the story eventually has to end.
Released shortly after the disbanding, Live at The Blue Universe is a live in studio radio show where Indian Summer were given a chance to harness their live sound for the future generations. The Bessie Smith samples ring out as the guitars chime, the dynamics laid out in a fashion that signals every moment could be the last. Of all the live recordings i have ever heard, Indian Summer show a true earnestness, the songs are expanded (check out the fifteen minute version of "woolworm/angry son") the intensity overwhelming. A perfect epitaph to a timeless band.
Much like their discography, LATBU quickly went out of print (1,200 original pressing), only to be revamped with additional material earlier this year and again go quickly out of print. These recordings are a testament to the greatness they let loose upon the world. For myself and all those who never had a taste of what this band could offer in a live setting, this recording is a godsend. I hope you enjoy as much as i have.

Japanther - Wolfenswan CD
you know, like a japanese panther.

Julia - Julia CD
I'm almost reverent when speaking of this album. i bought my copy at an Avail show in Fayetteville, Ar. from none other than Neil of Nausea. When i got home i put this album on and let it overtake me. Since purchasing this album nearly thirteen years ago, nothing i can think of is more immediate and intense than this LP. You really have no choice but to listen.

MGMT - Oracular Spectacular CD
MGMT - Time To Pretend CD
N.O.T.A. - Live At The Crystal Pistol CD
Legends of Oklahoma Punk Rock. Captured in their eighties prime. A perfect capsule of one of the 918's most underappreciated exports.
Off Minor - Innominate LP
Off Minor/My Disco - Split 7"

Orchid - Dance Tonight! Revolution Tomorrow! 10"
With Chaos Is Me, Orchid had developed their sound significantly from their early seven inches, on Dance Tonight! you can hear the the band becoming more and more comfortable taking chances exploring their options. My personal favorite of their releases, albeit I wish it were longer, Dance Tonight! is an urgent plead for survival, ten songs blast past each a stunning addition in their repertoire, "I Am Nietzsche" and "Lights Out" immediately come to mind as classics. The dramatic conclusion, "...and the cat turned to smoke" is a testament to tension, paranoia, anxiety, depression, and liberation wrapped inside a dirge come full scale attack on the senses. Listen to it on repeat feel it get under your skin like a parasite, embrace it, eventually you won't be able to live without it.
Blue vinyl!
Orchid - Chaos Is Me LP
IN '99 Hardcore was getting stagnant, the record distros had dried up, the record store i worked up folded, my girlfriend left for Germany only to return and break up with me and date my friend who had been sleeping on my couch for a few months, and then the doctors thought i was going to die. i fell apart at the seams and just dropped out of everything.
a few years and a couple of record stores later, i see the hardcore scene taking a dramatic upward swing, the Christians had a stranglehold on the macho chugga-chugga thing, but the other kids, they had been listening to something else entirely, and i needed to know what the hell it was. I had seen the orchid records in the store i worked at, and i saw the ebullition tag, but something inside always made me stop short. maybe i just wasn't ready.
i asked a few of the regulars what they thought i should check out, the most common response was orchid followed in at a close second with lightning bolt, so i followed suit and picked up what i could. when i got home i slapped the vinyl directly onto the turntable, changed the speed to 45 rpm, and let her rip. i was pleasantly surprised, something new, something exciting, a guitarist who reminds me a little of Tonie Joy in playing style, but in and of itself original. the lyrics, shredded love letters and the call to arms, delivered in what constantly sound like the last gasps for help in the depths of hell.
in less than twenty minutes my faith in hardcore had been restored by a band in the process of breaking up. wouldn't be the first time.
Orchid - Gatefold LP
Orchid - Dance Tonight! Revolution Tomorrow! CD
Orchid - Totality CD (all their 7"s collected in one place!)

Policy of Three - Anthology 2xCD
Named after a peasant uprising that took place in late '30s Communist China, this four piece would go on to challenge oppressive ideas and call for the spirit of independence in their staunch six year history. Most of their releases have been out of print for some time, luckily the folks at Ebullition, always one to have their finger on the pulse of the hardcore fan, released this double disc a few years back. The set captures the band on the digital medium for the first time. Made up of their two incredible 7"s, the Dead Dog Summer LP, a myriad of compilation tracks, topped off nicely with a six song live set recorded in the summer of '95 (which includes two songs never before recorded in studio). i would consider this an invaluable addition to any collection.

Portrait - Discography CD
Portraits Of Past - 01010101 LP

Saetia - A Retrospective CD

Sawhorse - Sawhorse 7" (Legendary!)
Secret Mommy - Mammal LP
Seein' Red - We Need To Do More... LP
Amazing political thrash hardcore from Sweeden. on, what else, red vinyl! If you think it might sound like the Refused, you would be dead wrong, it sounds nothing like Nation Of Ulysses.
Seein' Red - Marinus 7"
Seein' Red/Judas Iscariot - Split LP

Sinaloa - Oceans Of Islands LP
Reminiscent of so many great band from the mid-nineties, Sinaloa have outdone themselves with this, their latest release. I've already claimed one copy of this, so you better hurry before this contender for record of the year is snatched up by your former best friend.
Sinaloa - Footprints On Floorboards CD

Soophie Nun Squad - The Devil, The Metal, The Big Booty Beats CD
Just Stop! Stop! Stop! Stop! Everybody Stop and Do The Cinderblock! And Stop!
Hailing from the crime-ridden capital of Arkansas, come another entry in Little Rock's history of greatness. Soophie Nun Squad was founded from the ashes of William Martyr 17, but the sound decisively different. Starting as a four piece but gradually adding members to push the boundaries so to speak, instilling a revolving cast of additional members to keep things fresh.
The Devil, The Metal, The Big Booty Beats is (in my humble opinion) the crowning achievement of their recording career, capturing the high energy dance party that was their live show in a studio setting. Think a self-deprecating Black Eyes without the weirdo art-noise twist and you are a bit closer to discovering their sound, but still doesn't do it enough justice. Mixing every musical style they could get their hands on and blending it into one uber-sound.
Soophie Nun Squad became legends in their own time with their relentless touring schedule and never a dull minute live shows. Sadly, after thirteen years, 2007 marked their final performance, playing a post screening party for the equally amazing Towncraft:Notes From A Local Scene Documentary.
If you haven't had the chance before, there's no time like the present.
Soophie Nun Squad - Pasizzle, The Sizzle... CD
Still Life - From Angry Heads With Skyward Eyes 2xLP
It was nearly ten years ago when Still Life played the park and Sweatband had been asked to open. I couldn't believe it, getting to open for one of my favorite hardcore bands was a bit intimidating, especially when the (sweat)band's sole mission was improv, taking what we could get and making the most (noise) of it. We started the show early sans drummer, twenty minutes of feedback and screaming with the occasional blast of thunderous reverb when i would decide to attack the p.a.
I noticed a van full of people and equipment being unloaded in the distance, of which one was our(for-the-time-being) drummer Joey and the boys who would be Still Life. Joey sat up his kit quick and we took on another twenty minutes, fully charged and impassioned.
When we finished, David from Still Life came up to me, telling me he liked what he saw. Either he was being nice or maybe Joey had filled him in on the joke, whatever it was i would take it at face value and believe it was show well played.
Winded yet ecstatic i anticipated what was about to unfold. Jason and I taking our places as close to the band as possible. For months we had been listening to their double LP From Angry Heads With Skyward Eyes, basking in its power and intensity. Flipping through the gatefold booklet taking in the imagery and words of hope scattered throughout. Sometimes we would find ourselves playing "Song About Love" over and over trying to figure a way to make the epic song never end. Their style of hardcore has almost metal overtones with it's wicked locked in a groove riffs yet the sincerity was so on the sleeve it made you scratch your head. The subtle additions of piano added another texture really unheard of at the time, propelling the music even further into the pantheon of greatness.
When Still Life began their set they asked for a moment of silence as they read something meant to be uplifting but was met with a lot of snickers. Jason and I were getting pissed, but we knew once they played all eyes would be on them. And so it was, shirtless in the Oklahoma sun, that they presented their craft and forged an unspoken bond. Unlike most shows, the kids were quiet, taking in what they were witnessing and showing a reverence i had never thought most of them were capable of. Jason supplied the air piano that day, filling in those few minor moments with a flick of the wrist on the imaginary ivories. As the show wrapped up most everyone there was arm in arm, a sense of brotherhood in knowing we had all witnessed something special that day.
I could talk about the record, but I'm more content with the memories. In my opinion, it's a classic piece of the genre, boundary pushing and electric. in a word, perfect.
Struggle - Discography CD
Members of Swing Kids, The Locust, Black Heart Procession, 3 Mile Pilot, Navio Forge, Plot To Destroy The Eiffel Tower, play extremely fast political hardcore with a few touches of personal beliefs of freedom thrown in for good measure.
Submission Hold - Waiting For Another Monkey To Throw The First Brick LP
For years I had heard the name Submission Hold, yet for all intents and purposes could have never told you what they sounded like. That was until the summer of '98 when the greatness that is Submission Hold rolled into Tulsa, and ravaged the park with their blistering take on hardcore. Fronted by one of the most gorgeous women in hardcore, Submission Hold's sound plays out anything but typical hardcore. Wicked time changes over a steady sustained beat, Jen actually singing until the moment is right, then unleashing the ravaged vocals from within. While the band powers through their own brand of hardcore, the additions of a pan flute and random woodwinds create a complex sound that for the time was unheard of.
When they came through Tulsa it was a great event, one of the last great hardcore shows from my youth, Submission Hold playing in the park blowing minds in only the way they can. Much of their set was pulled from their yet to be released first full length LP, Waiting For Another Monkey..., making it all the more important for me to get a hold of the record. If for anything else the droning call and response of "deadpan" was one of the most intense moments i can remember, the band itself almost doubled over their instrument as if they were about to collapse at any second. When i finally did get a hold of the full length, i was in heaven, each track as good as i had remembered it being in the park, if not even better, as the production was very clean showing off the little flourishes they had added in studio layering the rage.
Submission Hold - Sackcloth And Ashes LP
Ten Grand/Meth & Goats - Split 7"

Transistor Transistor - Young Vampires 7"
Trusty - Sugar Smack CD
Trusty were another of the original fire in the burgeoning Little Rock Scene, pop punk legends in their own right, yet widely overlooked. After years together inside the confines of their capital releasing their own singles and booking their own shows, they made a collective decision and set sight on the nation's capital. As most people know (or not), Dischord Records is exclusively local, only putting out records by bands from the D.C. area, so when they signed Trusty in '95 it could have been seen as something as a surprise. Due in part to their relentless playing schedule, ever-growing crowd following, and inescapable Punk Rock ethics, they were something of a natural fit for the labels ever changing roster/sound. In their tenure on the label they released two incredible albums before disbanding in the late 90's, leaving an inspirational legacy behind them rife with pop hooks and warm feelings.

hey, I think I actually need that Admiral 7" for my Hoover Genealogy Project (I have the mp3s of the Admiral s/t 7" already). I haven't done anything on it in a while, but I was planning on writing up either Until The Eagle Grins or Admiral + Fine Day.

also, I posted up that Ampere/Sinaloa split without much people seeming to notice. Even though I have it on CD, which is really well done, I'm very tempted to buy the LP.

I think i might have the tracks for the revolving & loading 7" on my hard drive somewhere, if you'd like i could up it for you tomorrow.
the ampere/sinaloa split is mighty, i haven't fully delved into the lp's packaging, but the pics you posted of the cd look amazing. then again pretty much anything ebullition has ever put out has looked amazing...well almost everything. on a side note, i was rather surprised the sawhorse and floodgate records were still in print much less showed up, also what's up with the new vinyl color for Dance Tonight! not to mention the super glossy sleeve. i'm a bit dumbfounded.

yeah, if you could that please it would be cool.

I remember seeing the Sawhorse 7" in print on the Ebullition website - the $100 minimum makes it difficult to justify ordering from them, but it wouldn't say I didn't get to far off in finding stuff I wanted!

also, that mixtape looks screamo-tastic... very good.

jay, a mighty post, and an even mightier order!

dude. this mix rules. i am gonna link it to Zen.

I love that Sinaloa song, Voices Resound. It always makes me think of Hoover, except with out a bass. That album is surely gonna be a peak of 08.
Brother Inferior ruled.

I hadnt listened to Ordination of Aaron in a long time.
